Dr. Ying Zhang received her early piano training in Xi’an Conservatory, China. After winning the National Young Pianist’s Competition, she performed her debut concert with the Chinese Youth Orchestra at the age of twelve.
In 1992, Dr. Zhang immigrated to the United States attending Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, there she graduated with an emphasis on Theatre Performance. Dr. Zhang received full scholarships to further her education at Oberlin Conservatory (Bachelor of Music 1999), Indiana University - Bloomington (Master of Music 2002), and Rice University (Doctor of Musical Arts 2008), where she studied under Dr. Robert Roux. She was one of twelve pianists from around the world to be invited to participate in the prestigious Summer Music Festival at Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara. Her sensational performances at the piano continued to gain her merit scholarships at Summer Piano Festival SUNY New Paltz, and the Las Vegas International Summer Music Festival. Dr. Zhang was the proud winner of the Southern California Bach Competition, the Redlands Bowl Competition, the Bartok/Kabalevsky International Piano Competition, and the Jacob Flier International Piano Competition. In 2012, she was invited as the first pianist to play at Hollywood's home of the Oscars - the Kodak Theatre, a very special honor and recognition.
Dr. Zhang has more than 20 years of teaching experiences, having taught piano students of all ages, many of whom went on to pursue music degrees at various higher institutions. She has been on the faculty of the Alvin Community College, Michael P. Hammond Preparatory Program of the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University. She also served as teaching assistant at Oberlin Conservatory and at Indiana University. In the Fall of 2009, Dr. Zhang founded the Spotlight Piano Studio in Clear Lake, Texas. Her students have been prize winners at prestigious national and international competitions. Recently, Dr. Zhang served on the judge's panel for the Mika Hasler Young Artist Competition, and several other competitions. She has been invited as a piano faculty member in Burgos International Music Festival in Spain during the summer.
Currently, Dr. Zhang is working as the CEO and founder of the International Spotlight Performing Arts Academy, LLC, organizing and planning events with an emphasis on helping performing artists and students, to establish stronger foundation and build connections.
